This collection includes materials documenting the work of the Student Health Coalition, an organization developed at Vanderbilt University in 1969 to reach out to medically underserved communities in East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, and Southwest Virginia, and to join with local leaders with the goal of building a network of primary care clinics and bringing health services to Appalachian regions lacking reliable access to health care. Materials include correspondence, photographs, administrative files, grant and project proposals, reports, clippings, and research files. There are also materials relating to the community-driven archival project developed by
former leaders of the Student Health Coalition and the Southern Historical Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to document the history of the coalition’s work.
