Black in Appalachia

Black in Appalachia is a non-profit whose mission is to highlight the history and contributions of African-Americans in the development of the Mountain South and its culture, documenting and publicizing the largely untold history of Black communities in Appalachia.

2023 Grant Recipient.  The SHC Legacy supports a GIS mapping project, covering labor and ArchGIS subscription costs.  With these resources, Black in Appalachia will be able to pay workers a living wage.  In addition, the grant will provide a more robust mechanism for making research and data collection accessible to the public and researchers. The GIS project allows the website to be map-navigatable at the county level.  The project’s footprint includes data from across the Appalachian region with particular focus on Eastern Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Southern West Virginia, Western North Carolina, and Southeastern Kentucky.
