ACLC’s Coal Miner Health and Safety Project provides free legal services, advocacy, and education to coal miners, family, and community members affected by Black Lung disease and unsafe working conditions across Central Appalachia. Despite decades of regulation, Black Lung disease remains widespread due to ongoing silica exposure. Younger miners are increasingly diagnosed with Progressive Massive Fibrosis. Core ambitions include development of independent chest x-ray readings to strengthen claims for miners and community outreach services to educate about federal policy affecting mine safety and Black Lung benefits.
